England Deaf name Squad for Broadstreet Cup fixture vs Wales Deaf

By Sean Fletcher

England Deaf Head Coach Sean Fletcher has named a 23 man squad to travel to Cardiff later this month to defend the Broadstreet Cup

February 2018 saw England Deaf regain possession of the Broadstreet Cup, with a toughly contested victory over Wales Deaf at Ilkley RFC.

This time, both teams will return to the home of Cardiff Blues, as England prepare to defend their title after Head Coach Sean Fletcher, and assistant coach Graham Sage, announced a strong squad to head into the fixture.

The team will again be lead by Captain Luke Cheyne, who is slowly approaching the record number of International Caps for England Deaf, whilst Vice Captain Danny Rowland will also be vital in the leadership of the squad, following a hugely successful 2017/18 season which not only included the victory over Wales, but also a 3 test series win over New Zealand, a World Cup 7s Final appearance and a victory over the full Bulgarian International Side.

Fletcher is extremely happy with the squad he has been able to select, going on to say "our whole process and structure is working well. This is clearly shown in our blend in selection of experience and youth. Our final training sessions have been extremely competitive with a host of new players pushing for a place in this squad of 23."

That includes Jacob Unwin, Henry Lygo and Rhys Bingham, who will all be hoping to win their first cap in the Welsh Capital. Fletcher added "the quality of players we have been able to add to our wider squads over the previous few months has been outstanding, and Graham and I are delighted to be able to continue what has become somewhat of a tradition, with the introduction of players who will be gaining their first cap.

"Well done to everyone involved with EDRU, it is a strong backroom that is shaping us for the future."
