Since his debut in an international against Wales in 2015, Danny Rowland has become one of the first names on Head Coach Sean Fletcher’s team sheet. Appointed as EDRU vice-captain at the beginning of the 2017-18 season, the fast-paced number 9 has had his say on the current wave of success England Deaf Rugby is experiencing.
Danny said“The start of this season has been eagerly anticipated by both supporters and all those involved with EDRU. Last season was one of our most successful to date and the positive vibe instilled as a result is something we look to harness.
The first game of the season certainly did not disappoint with a trip to Sofia, to face off against play against the Bulgarian Elite National Side. This was an incredibly physical match which we managed to win with a huge performance in the second half.
Danny continued “what was much more pleasing and satisfying to see was the strength in depth shown on this trip, many new players getting to pull on the shirt and also an opportunity for players who have not necessarily played many tests previously to put forward claims for a test spot against Wales later in the year. All those involved most definitely gave the coaches food for thought and it was a pleasure to be a part of.”
Highlighting the success of the EDRU womens team of late, Danny added “It has also been great to see the women’s team pull together and have a storming year by winning the World Deaf 7s in Sydney, so from all the men we send a huge congratulations. We know how hard you have all worked and we cannot wait to see what is in store for you next.”
“For me, this year we must continue to build, recruit and promote England Deaf Rugby. I feel this will be achieved if everybody continues to commit, travel and support the team. The hard work put in by all the staff and players has been second to none and I along with many others will be giving my all to ensure we not only maintain these standards but also improve them.”
Danny added “with a successful team and group we push on with more community projects and more positive media due to fantastic results and performances in our test matches. This in turn will no doubt increase awareness and publicity around not just deaf rugby but deafness as a whole and will hopefully inspire and motivate youngsters and adults out there who face similar issues, of which we will try and support and direct anybody who needs our help or guidance.”
